Thrifty weekend events in Georgetown and LoCo

Here, some events. Go enjoy them, thrifters.

This swap got rained out the first time around, but fear not--it's back for a second try. Sunday, noon to 4, Propper Topper, Georgetown.  More details on the Propper Topper blog.

For the Virginia crowd, some info I copied and pasted directly from a TBD submission:
The 8th Annual Townwide Tag Sale in Purcellville is this weekend starting with Antique Flea Market running 8-10 Oct from 8-5 and the big event Sat & Sun 9-10 Oct 8-3 and 10-3. The whole Town becomes a yard sale! The event was selected by Visit Loudoun as the Best Small Tourist Event (<3000) for 2009. This year there are nearly 100 vendors plus 100 yard/business sales, free trolley, and everything you could want and more. Information sheets and maps are at the official website - www.townwidetagsale.com.
Purcellville, woo!

Your Girl Blogger is on the lam this weekend, so be sure to provide any updates or sweet pics from any thriftiness you get into.

DC Chillin': Fashion : District - The Show

We missed the runway show, but here are some shots of @readysetdc's Fashion: District - The Show, which featured a bunch of DC's local, independent clothing shops and vintage retailers.

Two photos by Josh Yospyn and the amazing view from the aptly-named View 14 near the U St. Corridor

Art was everywhere on the 9th floor

Shining a light on the intersection of vintage and art

The lovely Erin Derge shows off some of the wares in Treasury's pop-up shop. We have a lot to say about Treasury, so stay tuned!

Finally, the view. If you don't love this view, then you don't love DC enough. Just sayin'.

We'll be there. Will you? Say hi if you see us!

DC Chillin': Q and A with the Makers of Worn Magazine

Photo from the inaugural cover of Worn Magazine

Move over, glossy mags. You've got a new friend on the newsstands in DC. Worn Magazine launches in April, and its art/fashion/photography blend is sure to be eye candy for the area's creative types. We accosted editor/creative director Nicole Aguirre and head of photography Joshua Yospyn, who gladly answered some questions about their new effort. Media, fashion, and the snowpocalypse, after the jump:

DC Chillin': Goodwill's Trunk Sale and We Love DC Loves Luxury Consignment

Both of today's links come from We Love DC, because...because I love them.

Goodwill and Greater Goods are teaming up for another Travelin' Trunk Show, this Saturday from 11 to 2. They'll have some vintage stuff, and you can also drop off donations during the show.  That should inspire you to do a little spring cleaning so you can fit some new clothes into your closet!

We Love DC writer Kelly Collins Fredrick (also of CityShopGirl) highlights some of the high-end consignment shops with some fun photos.  We haven't visited any of these shops yet, but hope to do so soon.  Unfortunately, Fredrick had a bad experience when she visited Secondi, but we hope that others have received better service.

What consignment or thrift shops have you found especially friendly or helpful?  Fill me in!

DC Chillin': Spring Fever Edition

Your girl blogger is feeling a bit under the weather this weekend, so you may have to live without a Field Trip this week. I'm sad too. There are so many places I need to visit!

Quarter Life fave Ms. Spinach tweeted tonight that Remix on Capitol Hill recently closed. We're shocked and dying to know more. Come back, Remix, we love you.

Edited 3/7/10: The Remix has a note up on its Web site to mark the store's closing at the end of February. We visited the store in the fall and are very sad to see it go. Our best wishes to the staff and for owner Stacey's health.

Even though we're feeling pretty soggy, we're excited for some new things coming to Quarter Life soon. I'm going to fill you in on the do's and don'ts of buying secondhand shoes, and I'll be debuting the Quarter Life Closet, where you can buy some great vintage and thrift items directly from me!

Get out there and enjoy the weather this weekend!

The Find: A Little Spinach for Myself

Ms. Spinach has a recap of her first pop-up sale, but we've got a few photos to share, too!

Sign-making 101 with your guide, Ms. Spinach. I'm definitely keeping this little sign in mind when/if I ever have a similar sale of my own!

The rest are going under a cut, to save us all a little space!

DC Chillin': Spinach Vintage Pop-Up Shop

We're dying to take a peek into vintage blogger Betsy Lowther's closet.  Next weekend, we get our chance!  Miss Spinach herself reports prices in the under-$50 range for brokest of broke among us.

Awesome vintage threads and a little cash left in our pockets?  Count us in.

Let us know if you're planning to stop by--we'd love to meet you!

The Find: Cabin Fever Edition

We'd love to go thrift shopping right now.  We'd also love to go check out some great shops in the area.

But unless you've been living under a very warm rock, you're aware that it looks like this outside:

So nothing's really open.

Cabin fever is setting in, as there are eBay packages to send, errands to be done, and we can only lay in bed with this guy for so long:

His marathon napping makes us sleepy.

Since venturing out is verboten, it's time to take a look back at one of my favorite finds:

I found this little black dress toward the end of the summer and knew it would be perfect to hold onto until the fall.  Remember when there weren't piles of snow on the ground and we could go out with bare shoulders?  Those were the days.  My favorite accessory to complete this outfit is a bobby pin with a black satin bow attached to it.  The finishing touch!  The dress looks horribly wrinkled in this photo, but a little smoothing and good posture fixes that right up.

The Look: Little Black Dress
Label: Bebe
Location: Value Village, Hyattsville
Likewise: Anything goes.  I tend to stick with a sparkly silver bag and shoes (they match, holy cow), but don't be afraid to add some satiny color to complete the look!

A few more DC snowpocalypse photos after the jump, then it's back to shoveling for us!

An Ode to Galoshes

Dear Galoshes,

You're not that great, you know.  I know I found you abandoned at the end of spring semester at a sorority house, but still.  You provide absolutely no insulation when it's cold out and I'm climbing through mounds of slush and snow.  I have got to wear like three pairs of socks every time I put you on.  You obviously had no idea that 14,000 girls in DC would need you to come through this weekend.

But damn, you look cute.  So cute that it's almost bearable when I think the snow piles can hold me.  But I cannot walk on water (or snow, apparently) and have endured multiple foot-fulls of snow.

I may be covered in snow for the next two weeks, but at least I look good.

Love,
Lisatella

In Other News: your girl blogger reports from bed

Just because we're a little under the weather doesn't mean we can't still bring you a little info. Here's a bit of a roundup of recent thrifty news:

Arlington consignment shop Current has opened a second location in Alexandria, Virginia. Katie from WeLoveDC has some details. Current offers private, after-hours shopping parties for groups of 10 or more, so if your friends are as into consignment shopping as you are, call them up and make an appointment! We hope to visit this shop in the near future.

The DC Goodwill Fashionista has posted the second and third installments of ReUse, ReCycle, ReFashion with Miss District of Columbia. You have to get past the hokeyness of the series and the whole spinning crown bit that makes of jealous of Jen Corey's bling, because the series is pretty inspiring. If a beauty queen can furnish her new place at Goodwill, there should be no shame for others doing the same. When I move this summer, I'm thinking of doing something similar and outfitting the place in all secondhand items. Maybe I'll have to call Gillian for a little help!

From the Washington Post: D.C. embezzler Harriette Walters's ill-gotten goods sold to highest bidder. The DC tax manager's glamorous bags were auctioned off so that the city can get some of its cash back. I'm not sure if I'd want to buy items with that sort of history--nor can I plunk down $2,700 for a Louis Vuitton bag--but it obviously worked out for someone.

Later this week, we'll visit a Silver Spring thrift store that does it all in the name of charity PLUS we have some amazing heels to share. Stay tuned!

Your Girl Blogger On the Lam

Yours truly is pretending to be a jet-setter for a few days, so sit tight while we try not to cause trouble in a (slightly) warmer climate.

If you're in town this weekend, check out the D.C. Big Flea Market this weekend at the Dulles Expo Center. The show looks to be low on clothing, but high on antiques and collectibles and maybe a little vintage jewelry.

The Washington Antiques Show is also this weekend, for an extra dose of nostalgia.

(Someone grew up without cable television and spent a lot of time watching Antiques Roadshow...guess who?)

I leave you here in the DMV with my latest find, a houndstooth vest with faux fur hood that I'm loving in these frigid temps.

Look: Hipster kid vs. lumberjack
Label: BB Dakota
Likewise: Jeans and boots (Uggs and "fuggs" especially) round out the outdoorsy feel, even if you're staying inside.

In Other News: Brightest Young Things profiles DC fashion writer

Brightest Young Things has a fantastic profile of Betsey Lowther, a DC finalist for the site's Best Dressed List.  There are some pretty photos of her wardrobe, which is a vintage-lover's dream.  When asked about her favorite shops, she made me proud with this response:

BYT: What about for vintage?
BL: For vintage, although I will stop by place like Remix on Capitol Hill, I’m a big thriftier. I’d rather go and find it myself for $5 than go to a vintage stop and pay, you know, more….it’s also part of the hunt. If I had a recommendation, the Maryland side is generally much better for thrifting. I love Value Village….when you find that thing like a Dior skirt for $5, which I have, that is so much more fun than going to the store and finding it for $200, you know. I’m a big bargain shopper overall.

Her blog, Fashion is Spinach, is going on our blogroll, stat.
