Field Trip: PollySue's Vintage Shop

Look to PollysSue’s for seriously affordable vintage looks. The Takoma Park Store has two floors of fashion for men and women, with a little extra from the 50s and 60s. Items range from dresses to coats; lingerie to handbags; suspenders to a green sofa. No, really, the sofa is for sale. It's beautiful.

Owner Susan Collings said that while some items come into the store from thrift stores and consigners, estate sales are a great resource as well. “The best stuff comes from estate sales,” Collings told me, explaining that while vintage items in thrift stores may have seen a whole family’s worth of wear, estate sales often offer well-kept items in pristine condition.

The store and its staff is welcoming, and even has pets to offer. You’ll see a bird (who has pretty sweet digs, I must say) next to the counter, and lucky customers can find one of two dogs napping nearby.

If you’re feeling frugal, check out the $5 rack tucked in the basement near the menswear and vintage wedding gowns. But rest assured that none of the prices are scary at PollySue’s. Party dresses can often be found under $50, with some even under $30. Some items that may be 40 or 50 years old are still in like-new condition, proving that the proper care of quality items can provide generations of enjoyment.

Bottom line: If you’re going to a Mad Men theme party, go to PollySue’s first for a smart ensemble.

Hello, Betty Draper! This one was on sale for under $30.

Shoes! Styles range from a more modern pair by Candies (top center) to some back-in-the-day heels.

I had a hard time resisting this dress and jacket set, another find for under $30.

This mink stole was on sale because the lining was ripped. We can have a debate about wearing fur later, but I couldn't help but try it on.
