Field Trip: A-Community Thrift Store

706 University Boulevard East
Silver Spring, MD 20903

If you’re going to A-Community Thrift Store in East Silver Spring for the first time, go in the daytime. The store is located on the second floor of a market at the busy corner of University and Piney Branch, and the cramped parking situation can be treacherous.

Once you get out of the car, enter at the left corner of the back of the building and go up the stairs. Before you walk in, you’ll see what color tags are on sale that day (two colors each day, as I believe this store and the one on Georgia Avenue are both run by the American Veterans Association).

If you’re looking for shoes, A-Community Thrift has a large selection. If you think you’ve seen all the shoes, turn around and you’ll probably be surprised by another rack of shoes. It’s seriously a lot. Do you need some Steve Madden ballerina espadrilles for next summer? Get them now.

The store was not crowded when I visited after work on a Thursday, which made it easy to get through the many racks of clothes. It’s a hunt to find the great steals, but the prices are so low that it’s worth the search. And with a market and food vendors in the same building, it’s easy to find a snack if you lose track of time while shopping.

It’s worth stopping by A-Community Thrift Store if you’re in the area or are looking for a specific item that you’d like to get on the cheap.
